Facebook celebrated its 30 anniversary of the GIF and has shared an inside look at the GIF popularity on Messenger.
With this milestone, Facebook shared some stats related to GIFs since their introduction in Messenger in 2015:
- According to reports, People on Messenger sent nearly 13 billion GIFs in the last year, or nearly 25,000 GIFs every minute.
- GIF sends on Messenger have tripled in the past year
- New Year’s Day 2017 was the most popular day ever for GIF sends on Messenger, with more than 400 million GIF sends.
The company has lifted that restriction, making GIFs available to all. Now, when you visit Facebook.com or open the official Facebook apps, you will notice a small GIF icon that sits alongside an emoji inside the comment box. This opens up a small box that contains a search function and a collection of trending GIFs. so there’s an extensive selection of reactions to choose from.
It was the beginning of the current decade that embarked the recovery of GIF’s lost glory as social media became a rage. The revolution started by Orkut gets transferred to Facebook and WhatsApp. Almost every social media website/app supports GIF format. You can send, receive, and even create such files from scratch using a short video.
